The story, 'Button, Button' is written by Richard Matheson. The story is about the psychological condition of a lady regarding money. In this story, there are three characters who represent the main story. Norma and Arthur Lewis and Mr. Steward. Mr. Steward gives them a box with a button on the top. He offers them a handsome amount of $50000 by pushing the button. After pushing the button, someone in the world whom they do not know will die. Arthur disagrees with him and compels him out of the house. By going out, Mr. Steward gives his card if they change their mind regarding money. Arthur tears the card into pieces. Norma picks up the remaining piece of card with her. Norma wants this money because she cannot live in her present condition. The couple is facing financial problems. She has many ambitions in her life. She wants to go on a trip to Europe, in new clothes, etc. She does not care about someone's death. She wants to change her lifestyle on any count. She argues with her husband for getting money. But Arthur disagrees with her because murdering someone whom they do not know is also murder. The next day when Arthur goes to work, Norma picks up the box. After a long time. she comes to the decision that she pushes the button. She is about to go to the office, she hears the ring of the phone. She picks up the phone. She has told that her husband has been dead in a road accident. She becomes stunned. She at once calls Mr. Steward. She tells him about the death of someone whom she does know. The answer of Mr. Steward was Stunning. He answers her that she really thinks she knows her husband. This last sentence shows the mental condition of women. They do not prefer who dies. They prefer money regarding humans. Arthur warns her but she does not listen to her. She does not loyal to her husband. She only thinks about her ambitions. She thinks that money can bring happiness in the life. But she was wrong and prefer money on her husband. The moral lesson of the story is that every wife should listen and obey their husbands. They know the real mining of the problems. Money is temporary. No one can bring happiness in their lives with money. There is only one thing that can change lives from misery to happiness is the mutual understanding with couples. Without mutual understanding, someone will ruin their lives like Mr. Steward destroys the life of Norma.
Important Characters
Norma:
She is Arthur's wife. She is the main character throughout the Story. She has great feelings regarding life. She wants to enjoy life according to her style. She wants everything she desires. She wants to buy goods things like clothes, good house good shoes etc. She wants to go to trip to Europe and enjoys weekend. But her husband is totally different from her. He neither money to fulfill her desires nor he is interested in such things. A strange man takes a button which is connected to their office and offers her to push the button. After pushing the button someone in the world who she does not know will die and in return she will get a reward of 50000$. She surprises to hear the word 50000$. She tries to convince her husband but he does agree with her. After thinking a lot, she pushes the button. She at once gets the news that her husband has been died in road accident.
Arthur:
He is husband of Norma. His character is normal like any other stories characters. He is humble and kind hearted. He know the importance of human being. He does not want to kill anybody in the world either he knows or not. When she tries to convince him, at once denies her without looking at the reward. Even he does not listen to his wife when she says their life will be improved.
Mr. Steward:
He is important character in this story. He offers them to improve their life by pushing the button unit. He is from the agency who try to know who prefer money. He has mind that his offer will fit on women because they can be attracted easily towards money. He offers him to push the button and in reward they will get 50000$.
